I was born in Mumbles in 1930 to Eric and Doris Lynch (nee Webborn0 My father was considered a foreigner having arrived from Aberdare in the 20's. He always said he would never be considered a Mumbles man. On the other hand my mther's family traced their Mumbles residency back to 1508 and were considered the longest continual occupyers after the Hullens. my grandfather captained the first Mumbles rugby team in 1870. I subsequently played for Mumbles in the late 40's and early 50's. I enjoy clicking on to the webcam site and as I was born at 47 Gloucester Place I would appreciate a cam of same if ever you are down there. I now live in Queensland, Australia for the past 45 years, but have made frequent trips back to the U.K I have tried to make contact with you through your contact address but without luck. Keep up the good work. Best Regards Terry Lynch

my grandfather went to live in the Mumbles around 1917 and built a makeshift house on the top of the cliff. He had my uncle with him and eventually they went to work on Swansea dock. They both died in Swansea in the 1930's. He originally came from Fleetwood near Blackpool and worked on the dock here so i presume he moved there for work. My mother told me the "house" he built was made of timber and iron sheeting and had steps at the back, also sheep used to appear at the back door so i presume it must have been near fields. I have traced the family history back to 1750 in Dorset but am now trying to fill in the gaps when my grandfather came to Wales and came across this site. Any photographs of the Mumbles are therefore very interesting to me. It is strange that you have a pier and seafront there as that is exactly what Fleetwood has! it is very similar apart from Fleetwood is very flat. I have traced a half cousin of mine still living in Swansea whom i did not know existed so its very nice to have connections there! Thanks for this lovely informative site.

Hi,
Just wanted to commend you on a great website, it works wonders for homesickness (both the treatment and cause of!).

I grew up in Skewen, went to Olchfa school and spent a lot of time around Mumbles and surfed around Langland, Caswell, as well as the rest of the Gower. I've lived in Philadelphia for the last 11.5 years and I'm lucky if I get back once every couple of years.

I stumbled across your site after Googling for images of Mumbles for my daughter and I've been addicted ever since, it's amazing how much some things change, while others remain the same. For the summer of 1994 my wife (American) and I lived in one of the three little cottages across the road from the Beaufort in Norton, and she recognised the shot of the Beaufort immediately when she saw it.

Thanks again and keep up the great work,

Adrian Davies.

I have a copy of a birth certificate which my father sent for in order to belong to the Commercial Travellers Benefit Society in 1921. The address on the back is 41 Oakland Road, Mumbles.
His name was Walter Jones and during the 1914-1918 war he had been in Egypt with the Royal West Kents and RFC.
My father was born in Abergele North Wales and we do not know whether he had relatives in Mumbles or was in "digs".
Does anyone know the history of that address and whether the property still exists. He was born in 1888.

For those of us who know and love Swansea but live far away, your collection draws tears but remains a regular hit. Nostalgia is painful, often misleading but its a bitter sweet addiction nevertheless.

From Sydney, my letter to the SWEP about the bizarre decision to remove the slip bridge was published. It was not until I returned to Swansea last November that it suddenly became clear why it had to disappear. Only by working out the view from the new flats built on the site of the old Baths can you see that that damn bridge must have ruined the view of Mumbles....... Then a again I could be wrong.

I hope you might consider creating a section on your site which lists the departed and the soon to depart icons of Swansea - the train, the Weaver building, the dreadfully sad chimps in Brynmill Park zoo, the leisure centure, the fun fair on Swansea beach at the Sands, Oystermouth car park, the cafes in the slip bridge arches, the pier.....the heart of Swansea still pumps hard but for how long?

I do have my pictures but compared to yours, they are just good memories for me.
Cheers
Laurence (45, 20 of which in Swansea/West Cross).

I have just read through the Mumbles Page and thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially like Pete's pictures, although most of them showed chilly, wet weather.

My grandfather was the landlord of The Pilot MANY years ago, and also the Plough and Harrow.

Haven't visited Mumbles since 2002 but hope to make it at least once more.

I came across this site yesterday, when I was looking for pictures of the snow in Swansea! (I am very interested in weather)
I really like the site - it has a great layout, and many nice features. It is even better than a webcam, because the pictures are up-to-date, and they are many times better than images taken by a webcam, as they came from so many different and picturesque locations!

Well done with the site and I have added it to my faourites and will check ack often!

There was this big red dobermann that used to come out to walk across the golf course with us on the way back to the park with our groceries after a trip to the Mumbles supermarket, can you find him and get a photo please or a shot across the golf course towards the caswell beach or that old bunt down dolphin pub on the seafront !

Hello, I would love to move to the Mumbles in the foreseeable future and would appreciate some information on the immediate area to help me decide where I might like to live. It would br wonderful to live some where close to the Mumbles Mile with a sea view. Any info on what it is like to live in the Mumbles would be very much appreciated. I have been visiting Gower for some years now and have made friends on Gower and around Swansea/Pontardawe especially the "live music " scene which is superb. Sorry if this isn't what the comments column is for but I regularly look at your website and it gives me a real feel of the special Mumbles community. Regards.

Thanks for a bloody great site, People who moan about living in the UK, and the ones who think that the Mumbles is boring, should come and live in a small town in new England, it's so cold right now, you don't even want to go outside, I hope I can come home soon, for ever. Thanks, John Ridd.

Very good website. Lived in West Cross as a nipper, and have vivid memories of Mumbles. Lived in Bishopston until 16 then moved away. Now living in Christchurch, New Zealand. Do get homesick some times which is not helped by excelent web sites and photography such as yours. Will return some day. Thanks for all the pics. Mike
